Uluwatu Temple, known locally as Pura Luhur Uluwatu, is a sea temple located on the south-western tip of the Bukit Peninsula in Bali. It stands on a limestone cliff approximately 70 metres above the Indian Ocean and forms part of a group of temples traditionally believed to protect the island from sea-based threats. The site is associated with spiritual significance as well as its coastal setting.

The temple is thought to date to at least the 11th century and is linked to the Javanese priest Empu Kuturan, who played a role in shaping Balinese Hindu practices. It was later expanded by Dang Hyang Nirartha, a religious figure credited with establishing several important temples around Bali. The temple is dedicated to the spirits of the sea and is regarded as one of the island’s key directional temples.
Architecturally, Uluwatu Temple follows a traditional Balinese layout, with a series of courtyards and gateways constructed from stone. Access to the inner sanctum is restricted to worshippers, but visitors can walk along the cliff-top paths surrounding the complex. The site includes carved stone gates, shrines and protective walls, set against the backdrop of the ocean.
The surrounding cliffs are a defining feature of the site, providing wide views across the coastline and open sea. A pathway runs along the cliff edge, allowing visitors to observe the landscape from different angles. The area is also inhabited by monkeys, which are accustomed to human presence and may interact with visitors.
Uluwatu Temple is also known for hosting Kecak dance performances in an open-air setting near the cliff edge. These performances typically take place in the evening and are staged against the backdrop of the setting sun.

Located approximately 25 kilometres from Denpasar, the temple is accessible by road and is often included in itineraries covering the Bukit Peninsula. Today, Uluwatu Temple remains an active place of worship and a significant cultural site, combining religious function with a prominent coastal location.
