Old Fortress of Corfu

The Old Fortress of Corfu, known as Palaio Frourio, is a prominent defensive structure located on a rocky peninsula east of Corfu Town. Originally constructed by the Byzantines and significantly expanded by the Venetians in the 15th and 16th centuries, the fortress was designed to protect the town from naval attacks and played a central role in the island’s military history. It is one of the most important examples of fortification architecture in the Mediterranean.

The site is separated from the mainland by a moat known as the Contra-Fossa, which was historically navigable and enhanced the defensive capabilities of the fortress. Access is via a bridge that leads through a monumental gate. Inside, the fortress contains multiple levels, bastions, and military structures, including storage rooms, barracks, and powder magazines. Key features include the Venetian-built bastions, the central barracks, and a British-era lighthouse located at the highest point.

One of the most notable buildings within the complex is the Church of Saint George, constructed by the British in the early 19th century in the style of a Doric temple. The church reflects the fortress’s later use as a British garrison during their administration of the island. The upper levels of the fortress offer panoramic views of Corfu Town, the Ionian Sea, and the nearby Albanian coast.
