Empuries

Empúries, located near the modern town of L’Escala on Spain’s Costa Brava, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Catalonia. It was founded by Greek colonists from Phocaea in the 6th century BCE, later expanded by the Romans, and remained a significant settlement until the early Middle Ages. Its position on the Mediterranean coast made it a centre of trade and cultural exchange.

The site preserves remains of both Greek and Roman towns. The Greek settlement includes the foundations of temples, public squares, and houses arranged in a grid pattern. Artefacts such as pottery and inscriptions illustrate daily life and commerce. Nearby, the Roman city, established in the 1st century BCE, contained larger structures, including a forum, basilica, baths, and an amphitheatre. Mosaics and wall paintings have been uncovered, reflecting the wealth of its inhabitants.

Empúries also played a role in regional history. In 218 BCE, Roman troops landed here at the start of their campaign against Carthage in the Second Punic War. The site later became a provincial centre, demonstrating the integration of Hispania into the Roman world. By late antiquity, however, its importance declined, and the town was eventually abandoned.

Today Empúries is managed as an archaeological park, with pathways linking the Greek and Roman remains. The Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya–Empúries, located on site, houses finds from excavations, including sculptures, coins, and everyday objects. Exhibitions explain the cultural significance of the city and its role in Mediterranean history.

The setting of Empúries adds to its appeal. The ruins stand beside sandy beaches and the sea, providing a striking contrast between ancient structures and natural landscape. This combination illustrates the enduring importance of coastal settlements in Catalonia. Empúries remains one of the few places in Spain where Greek and Roman cities can be seen together, making it a landmark of archaeological and historical interest on the Costa Brava.
