The Papagayo Beaches are among the most beautiful and most visited beaches in Lanzarote. Located within the protected Los Ajaches Natural Monument on the island’s southern tip, this collection of golden sandy coves is famous for its clear turquoise water, volcanic scenery and unspoilt natural setting. For many visitors, a trip to the Papagayo Beaches is one of the highlights of a holiday in Lanzarote.
Unlike the resort beaches of nearby Playa Blanca, the Papagayo coastline remains largely undeveloped. The beaches sit beneath low volcanic cliffs and rugged hills that form part of the oldest geological region in Lanzarote. The absence of large hotels and urban development helps preserve a landscape that feels surprisingly natural despite its popularity.
The coastline consists of several beaches and coves connected by walking paths and viewpoints. Visitors can easily explore multiple beaches during a single visit, with each offering a slightly different atmosphere. Some beaches are broad and open, while others are smaller, more sheltered coves ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
The calm, clear water is one of the area’s greatest attractions. The sheltered bays often provide excellent swimming conditions, while snorkellers can explore rocky areas that support a variety of marine life. The vivid contrast between the golden sand, turquoise water and dark volcanic landscape creates some of the most photogenic scenery in the Canary Islands.
Many visitors arrive by car from Playa Blanca, although the area can also be reached on foot via coastal walking routes or by boat excursion. Several catamarans and mini-cruises operate from Playa Blanca and allow visitors to admire the coastline from the sea.
Although Playa de Papagayo itself is the most famous beach, the wider collection of beaches is what makes the area special. Exploring the coastline reveals a succession of attractive coves, viewpoints and swimming spots that together form one of the finest beach destinations in the Canary Islands.

Playa de Papagayo

Playa de Papagayo is the most famous beach in the area and one of the most photographed locations in Lanzarote. Playa Mujeres
Playa Mujeres is the largest beach in the Papagayo area and often the first beach visitors encounter when arriving from Playa Blanca. The broad sandy shoreline provides plenty of space even during busy periods, while the open views across the Atlantic and towards Fuerteventura add to its appeal. The beach is popular with swimmers, walkers and sunbathers.
Playa del Pozo
Located between Playa Mujeres and Playa de Papagayo, Playa del Pozo is generally quieter than its larger neighbours. The sheltered bay offers attractive swimming conditions and clear water, while the surrounding volcanic landscape provides a more natural and peaceful atmosphere.

How to Visit the Papagayo Beaches
Most visitors reach the Papagayo Beaches by car from Playa Blanca. A rough track leads through the protected area to a parking area near the beaches. The route is suitable for most vehicles but can be uneven in places. Walking from Playa Blanca is also possible and offers excellent coastal views, while boat excursions provide a different perspective of the coastline.
The beaches are best visited during calm weather when the water displays its characteristic turquoise colours. Early morning and late afternoon are often the most pleasant times to explore the area, particularly during the summer months.
Whether you visit for swimming, snorkelling, photography or simply to enjoy one of Lanzarote’s finest coastal landscapes, the Papagayo Beaches remain one of the island’s essential attractions.
