Griffith Park features a network of over 50 miles of trails that vary in difficulty and elevation. Popular routes include the trail to Mount Hollywood and the Griffith Observatory, offering views of the city skyline, the Pacific Ocean, and the Hollywood Sign. The park’s natural environment supports a variety of native plant and animal species, and it includes picnic areas, golf courses, equestrian trails, and the Los Angeles Zoo.

A prominent feature within the park is the Griffith Observatory, completed in 1935 and operated by the City of Los Angeles. The observatory is both a public astronomy facility and an educational centre. It includes exhibits on space and science, public telescopes, and a planetarium offering scheduled presentations. The facility is located on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood and provides one of the best public viewpoints over Los Angeles, including direct lines of sight to downtown and the Hollywood Sign.

The observatory’s interior features permanent exhibits on the solar system, telescope history, and cosmology. A 12-inch Zeiss refracting telescope is available for public viewing. The Samuel Oschin Planetarium hosts immersive shows with live narration, covering a range of astronomical topics. Entry to the observatory and most exhibits is free, though planetarium shows require a fee.

Parking is available throughout Griffith Park, although it can be limited during weekends and holidays. Paid shuttle services also operate from various park access points to the observatory. The site is family-friendly and equipped with restrooms and food services.

Griffith Park and Griffith Observatory combine outdoor recreation with scientific education and panoramic views. Together, they represent a significant cultural and natural asset within the Los Angeles metropolitan area, appealing to a broad range of visitors including hikers, families, and those interested in astronomy.
