Cabo Girão Skywalk

Cabo Girão Skywalk is a popular viewpoint located on the southern coast of Madeira, near the town of Câmara de Lobos. It is situated on the edge of Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, with an elevation of approximately 580 metres above sea level. The site offers expansive views over the Atlantic Ocean, the coastline towards Funchal, and the cultivated terraces known as “fajãs” at the base of the cliff.

The main feature of the site is the glass-floored skywalk, constructed in 2012 to enhance visitor experience. The structure extends slightly over the edge of the cliff and is reinforced with steel and transparent panels, allowing visitors to look directly down to the shoreline and farmland below. The platform is designed to support high foot traffic and is frequently used as a photo location. While the experience may be challenging for those with vertigo, the site is considered safe and structurally sound.

Access to the skywalk is straightforward by road and includes a parking area, rest facilities, a small café, and souvenir stands. It is also a regular stop on many guided island tours. Public transport from Funchal is limited, so most visitors arrive by car, taxi, or organised tour. There is no entry fee to access the skywalk.

In addition to sightseeing, Cabo Girão is a known launch point for paragliding due to its height and favourable wind conditions. The cliff also has a small chapel, the Chapel of Our Lady of Fátima, built in the 1950s, located near the viewpoint.

The area surrounding Cabo Girão includes vineyards, banana plantations, and steep valleys, offering a contrast between cultivated land and rugged topography. From the platform, visitors can observe the contrast between the elevated landscape and the narrow strip of coastal farmland reclaimed by local farmers over generations.

Cabo Girão Skywalk is a frequently visited site on the island and is typically included in half-day excursions covering the south coast. Its combination of natural height and man-made infrastructure makes it one of Madeira’s most recognisable lookout points.
