Arc de Triomphe

Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz, the Arc de Triomphe was designed by architect Jean Chalgrin. Its construction was completed in 1836, long after Napoleon’s reign had ended. The arch stands 50 meters tall, 45 meters wide, and 22 meters deep, making it the second-largest triumphal arch in the world.

The design of the Arc de Triomphe features four main sculptural groups on each of its pillars: The Departure of the Volunteers (also known as La Marseillaise) by François Rude, The Triumph of 1810 by Jean-Pierre Cortot, The Resistance of 1814, and The Peace of 1815, both by Antoine Étex. Additionally, the names of 660 generals and the major victories of the French armies are inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces.

Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, added in 1921 to honor the unidentified soldiers who died during World War I. An eternal flame, rekindled every evening at 6:30 PM, serves as a poignant reminder of those who lost their lives in conflict.

Visitors can ascend the 284 steps to the top of the monument, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of Paris. The observation deck offers a unique vantage point of the city’s layout, particularly the twelve grand avenues radiating from the monument, including the famed Champs-Élysées.
