Ponta de São Lourenço is the easternmost point of Madeira Island, located within the municipality of Machico. It is a narrow peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean and is characterised by its arid landscape, exposed cliffs, and absence of dense vegetation, in contrast to the rest of the island’s typically lush environment. The area is part of the Ponta de São Lourenço Nature Reserve, established to protect the unique geological formations, flora, and fauna found in this part of the island.
The peninsula is primarily composed of volcanic rock, with basalt and limestone formations shaped by erosion and sea activity. The terrain is mostly barren, with low-lying shrubs, endemic plants, and limited tree coverage due to high winds and minimal rainfall. Despite its harsh environment, the area supports several rare plant species and serves as a habitat for nesting seabirds. The surrounding waters are also part of a marine reserve and are noted for their biodiversity.
A well-maintained hiking trail, the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8), begins at the Baía d’Abra parking area and leads along the spine of the peninsula. The route is approximately 3.5 kilometres one way and is considered moderately challenging due to exposed sections and uneven ground. Hikers encounter viewpoints overlooking both the northern and southern coastlines of the island, as well as offshore islets such as Ilhéu do Farol and Ilhéu da Cevada. At the end of the trail, near the lighthouse (Farol da Ponta de São Lourenço), there is a small shelter and resting area.
Access to the peninsula is by road from Caniçal, the nearest town, which offers basic facilities including shops and parking. There are no services along the hiking route, and visitors are advised to bring water, sun protection, and appropriate footwear.
Ponta de São Lourenço offers a distinct landscape compared to the rest of Madeira, making it a key location for hiking, nature observation, and coastal scenery. It remains one of the most recognisable natural landmarks on the island.
