The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is a large ornamental fountain located at the base of Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, between Plaça d’Espanya and the National Art Museum of Catalonia. It was constructed for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition as part of a broader urban redevelopment project designed by engineer Carles Buïgas. The fountain is known for its choreographed light and music performances, which continue to be a popular public attraction.

The fountain features a series of cascading basins and operates using recycled water. It covers a large elliptical area and can circulate up to 2,600 litres of water per second through over 3,000 nozzles. The visual effect is enhanced by over 4,000 lights and multiple water displays that reach heights of over 50 metres. The performances integrate water movement, lighting sequences, and synchronised music, ranging from classical compositions to contemporary soundtracks.

Originally powered by gravity and early 20th-century technology, the fountain was restored in the 1980s and updated again for the 1992 Summer Olympic Games, held in Barcelona. Modern upgrades included more efficient lighting systems and computerised controls to enhance precision and energy efficiency. Since then, it has remained a central feature of the Montjuïc area’s cultural and recreational landscape.
The fountain is active on select evenings throughout the year, with more frequent performances during spring and summer. Visitors typically gather along the Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina for a view of the show, which lasts around 15 to 20 minutes. It is especially popular with families and tourists, offering a free, open-air experience in a prominent public setting.
The Magic Fountain is framed by several architectural and cultural landmarks, including the Palau Nacional (National Art Museum of Catalonia), the Venetian Towers, and the Fira de Barcelona exhibition centre. Its continued popularity is due to both its historical significance and its role as a public spectacle combining engineering, design, and entertainment.
