Playa del Inglés is one of the largest and most famous resort areas in Gran Canaria. Located on the island’s southern coast beside Maspalomas, the resort developed rapidly during the tourism boom of the 1960s and 1970s and remains one of the main holiday destinations in the Canary Islands. Known for its long sandy beach, lively nightlife and year-round warm climate, Playa del Inglés attracts visitors from across Europe throughout every season.
The beach itself stretches for several kilometres and connects directly with the famous Maspalomas Dunes. Wide areas of golden sand provide plenty of space for sunbathing, beach sports and long coastal walks. The Atlantic Ocean here is usually suitable for swimming, although conditions can occasionally become rougher than in some of the island’s more sheltered bays. The promenade above the beach contains cafés, bars and restaurants overlooking the sea and remains busy from morning until late evening.
Playa del Inglés has developed a reputation as one of Gran Canaria’s main entertainment centres. Shopping centres such as Yumbo Centre and Kasbah became well known for nightlife, bars and late-night entertainment, helping establish the resort as one of the island’s most energetic holiday destinations. The area is also particularly popular within the LGBTQ+ community and hosts several major annual events and festivals.
Despite its reputation for nightlife, Playa del Inglés also works well as a base for quieter holidays. Many hotels, apartments and pools are set away from the busiest entertainment areas, while the nearby dunes and beaches provide large open natural spaces only minutes from the resort centre. Visitors can also easily explore other parts of southern Gran Canaria including Puerto Rico, Puerto de Mogán and inland mountain villages.
Sunset is one of the best times to experience Playa del Inglés. As the sun lowers behind the Maspalomas Dunes and Atlantic Ocean, the beach takes on a calmer atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the lively nightlife that begins later in the evening throughout the resort.
