La Graciosa

La Graciosa is a small volcanic island located just north of Lanzarote and is one of the most peaceful and unspoilt destinations in the Canary Islands. Separated from Lanzarote by the narrow strait known as El Río, the island feels dramatically quieter and more remote than the larger tourist resorts nearby. With sandy tracks instead of paved roads and very few cars, La Graciosa offers a slower and more traditional atmosphere that attracts visitors looking to escape modern resort tourism.

Most visitors arrive by ferry from the harbour town of Órzola in northern Lanzarote. The crossing itself provides impressive views of Lanzarote’s volcanic cliffs before reaching Caleta de Sebo, the island’s main settlement. This small village contains whitewashed houses, seafood restaurants and sandy streets where bicycles and walking remain the main forms of transport.

Much of La Graciosa forms part of a protected natural park shared with the surrounding Chinijo Archipelago. The island contains volcanic hills, empty beaches and wide open coastal landscapes with remarkably little development. Some beaches can only be reached by bicycle, jeep taxi or long walks across sandy tracks, helping preserve their isolated atmosphere.

Playa de las Conchas is often considered the island’s most spectacular beach. Located on the northern coast beneath volcanic mountains, the beach offers golden sand and dramatic Atlantic scenery, although strong currents usually make swimming unsafe. Other beaches closer to Caleta de Sebo provide calmer conditions suitable for swimming and snorkelling.

The absence of large hotels, traffic and nightlife is one of La Graciosa’s defining characteristics. Even during busy periods the island remains noticeably quieter than Lanzarote itself. Many visitors come only for a day trip, although staying overnight allows a better chance to experience the island’s peaceful atmosphere after the ferries leave.

For travellers looking for a more natural and undeveloped side of the Canary Islands, La Graciosa offers a rare combination of volcanic landscapes, quiet beaches and traditional island life only a short distance from Lanzarote.
