Ipanema Beach (Praia de Ipanema) is a renowned stretch of sand located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nestled between Leblon and Arpoador, this 2.6 kilometer-long beach is bordered by a well-planned neighborhood filled with boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and art galleries.

The beach gained international fame in the 1960s through the popular bossa nova jazz song, “The Girl from Ipanema,” composed by Vinicius de Moraes and Antônio Carlos Jobim. It is recognized for its social gatherings, sports activities, and the vibrant lifestyle of its visitors and residents.

Ipanema Beach is divided into segments by postos, or lifeguard towers, each attracting a unique crowd. For instance, Posto 9 is popular among young people and artists, while Posto 8 is known for its LGBTQ+ friendly atmosphere.

One of the main attractions is the “calcadão,” a broad sidewalk decorated with a distinctive wave pattern, ideal for jogging, skating, or simply strolling. Every Sunday, a section of the road near the beach is closed to vehicles and becomes a leisure area known as the “Ipanema Hippie Fair,” where local artisans sell crafts, food, and clothes.
