Begijnhof

The Begijnhof is a historic and peaceful courtyard located in the heart of Amsterdam, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s religious and architectural past. Founded in the early 14th century, the Begijnhof was originally established as a residence for the Beguines, a Catholic lay sisterhood of women who lived pious lives without taking formal religious vows. It remains one of the oldest and most well-preserved inner courtyards in Amsterdam.

The Begijnhof is unique in that it is one of the few remaining medieval hofjes (courtyards) in the city, surrounded by a cluster of traditional Dutch houses. Among them, No. 34 is particularly significant as it is the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam, dating back to the early 16th century, and one of the few surviving wooden structures after a series of fires led to the banning of timber construction in the city.

At the heart of the Begijnhof is the English Reformed Church, a simple yet historically important building originally constructed in the 15th century. This church was later handed over to English-speaking Protestants in the 17th century and continues to serve as a place of worship today. Nearby is the Begijnhof Chapel (Begijnhofkapel), a Roman Catholic chapel where the Beguines secretly practiced their faith during the Protestant Reformation when Catholicism was banned in the Netherlands.

The Begijnhof is still home to private residents, and although it is open to the public during the day, visitors are asked to respect the peaceful atmosphere of the courtyard. The area provides a welcome respite from the bustling city streets, with its well-maintained gardens and historical buildings offering a serene environment for quiet reflection.

The Begijnhof is a significant historical and cultural site, reflecting Amsterdam’s religious history and its tradition of hofjes. Its central location, tucked away near the busy Spui square, makes it an easily accessible yet tranquil retreat for visitors interested in the city’s heritage.
