Beaumaris Castle, located in the coastal town of Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey, is one of the most celebrated examples of medieval military architecture in Europe. Built between 1295 and 1330, it was the last of the castles constructed by Edward I in his campaign to conquer Wales. Designed by the master architect James of St. George, Beaumaris is often regarded as the finest example of a concentric castle, where walls within walls create multiple layers of defense.
The castle was strategically positioned to control the Menai Strait, providing a vital supply route for English forces. Its design incorporates a nearly perfect symmetry with an outer wall featuring 16 towers and a robust gatehouse, encircling an inner wall with another six towers and two additional gatehouses. The structure is surrounded by a wide moat, which was connected to the sea, allowing for supplies to be delivered directly to the castle.
Despite its grandeur, Beaumaris Castle was never completed. The financial and logistical demands of Edward I’s campaigns eventually exceeded resources, leaving parts of the upper levels unfinished. Nonetheless, the castle’s formidable design remains evident, showcasing innovative defensive features such as murder holes, arrow slits, and multiple drawbridges.
Today, Beaumaris Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized alongside other Edwardian castles in Wales for its historical and architectural significance. Visitors can explore the well-preserved walls, towers, and gatehouses, gaining insight into the military strategies of the late 13th century. Informational panels and exhibitions provide historical context, detailing the castle’s construction and its role in the wider conquest of Wales.
The castle is also set against the scenic backdrop of the Menai Strait, offering picturesque views of the surrounding area. Beaumaris itself is a charming town with additional attractions, including a historic courthouse and Victorian pier.
