Wat Saket, also known as the Golden Mount or Phu Khao Thong, is a distinctive Buddhist temple located in the historic district of Rattanakosin Island in Bangkok, Thailand. The temple is celebrated for its unique hilltop location, stunning panoramic views of the city, and a significant stupa (chedi) that sits atop the artificial mound.

The temple’s history dates back to the Ayutthaya period when King Rama I, the founder of the Chakri Dynasty, ordered the construction of a chedi at the site. The chedi was intended to serve as a monument to honor his ancestors and a means to mark the new capital of Siam (present-day Thailand).

The artificial hill that houses the chedi was created by accumulating earth removed during the construction of the new canal, Khlong Rop Krung. The temple’s name, “Wat Saket,” translates to “Golden Mount,” which is a reference to the golden chedi crowning the hill.
To reach the chedi, visitors must ascend a series of winding steps that lead to the summit. Along the way, there are various points for rest and reflection, including small shrines, bells, and bronze sculptures. The staircase is shaded by tropical trees and offers a serene environment.
The highlight of Wat Saket is undoubtedly the golden chedi at the top. The stupa is adorned with intricate details, glistening in the sunlight. Inside the chedi, relics and sacred Buddha images are enshrined. The view from the summit offers a panoramic perspective of Bangkok, including views of the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, providing an ideal vantage point for photography and enjoying the cityscape.
Every November, Wat Saket hosts a lively temple fair known as the “Festival of the Golden Mount” or “Loy Krathong.” During this time, the temple and its surroundings come alive with colorful decorations, traditional performances, and various street vendors, attracting both locals and tourists.
Wat Saket is a significant cultural and historical site in Bangkok, and its serene setting, unique architecture, and breathtaking views make it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking to explore the rich cultural heritage of the city.
