Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) was an Italian poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral philosopher, and political thinker. He is best known for the monumental epic poem “La commedia”, later named “Divina Commedia” (The Divine Comedy). His work has made an indelible mark on world literature, and he is often revered as one of the greatest poets in human history.
Born in Florence, Dante’s life and work were shaped by the complex politics of the city-state, leading to his exile in 1301. His experience of loss, suffering, and yearning influenced his literary creations.
The Divine Comedy, widely considered his masterpiece, is an epic allegorical poem describing the journey of its protagonist, who is guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil and then his ideal woman Beatrice, through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio), and Paradise (Paradiso). It stands as a remarkable piece of world literature and an illustrious medieval commentary on the afterlife. The work presents a synthesis of the medieval understanding of the Universe, with elements of Christian theology, philosophy, history, and myth.
The poem, written in the Tuscan language, established the dialect as the Italian standard. It is widely known for its stylistic achievements, being written in terza rima, a complex verse structure. Dante’s other significant works include “De Monarchia”, a treatise on political philosophy, in which he advocates for a universal monarchy; and “La Vita Nuova”, a collection of his earlier poetry with commentary, celebrating his love for Beatrice.
