Edinburgh Castle is one of Scotland’s most prominent historic landmarks, situated atop Castle Rock, a volcanic plug that dominates the skyline of Edinburgh. Daily highlights include the firing of the One O’Clock Gun from Mills Mount Battery, a tradition dating to 1861, originally intended to help ships set their maritime clocks. Visitors can also view Mons Meg, a 15th-century siege cannon, and panoramic views over Edinburgh from the battlements.
The castle is accessed via the Royal Mile and is managed by Historic Environment Scotland. It remains one of the most visited paid attractions in the United Kingdom and plays a central role in the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo, held on the Esplanade each August. Timed entry is advised due to high visitor numbers, especially in summer.
