Saklikent Gorge

Saklikent Gorge is one of Turkey‘s most spectacular natural attractions and one of the most popular day trips from Fethiye. Carved over thousands of years by fast-flowing mountain water, the dramatic canyon stretches for approximately 18 kilometres through the western Taurus Mountains and reaches depths of up to 300 metres in places. Towering limestone cliffs, icy-cold streams and breathtaking scenery combine to create one of the country’s most impressive landscapes.

Located around 40 kilometres from Fethiye, Saklikent offers a refreshing escape from the heat of the Mediterranean coast. Even during the height of summer, the water flowing through the gorge remains remarkably cold as it originates from mountain springs high above the canyon. Many visitors welcome the chance to cool their feet while walking through the shallow river beneath the towering cliffs.

The entrance to the gorge begins with a wooden boardwalk attached to the canyon wall, allowing visitors to admire the dramatic rock formations before reaching the river itself. From here, the adventure continues on foot through the water. Depending on the season and water levels, visitors can walk several kilometres into the gorge, climbing over smooth rocks and wading through shallow sections of the river while surrounded by sheer limestone walls.

The constantly changing landscape makes every visit unique. Narrow passages open into wider sections of the canyon, while sunlight filtering between the cliffs creates beautiful reflections on the water. The combination of cool temperatures, rushing streams and towering rock faces provides a striking contrast to the beaches and coastal scenery for which the region is famous.

Beyond the gorge itself, the surrounding area has developed into a popular visitor centre with riverside restaurants, cafés and picnic areas built on wooden platforms above the flowing water. Many visitors relax here after exploring the canyon, enjoying traditional Turkish meals while listening to the sound of the river beneath them.

Saklikent is also well known for outdoor adventure activities. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy river tubing, rafting and zip-lining, while the surrounding mountains offer opportunities for hiking and jeep safaris. Many organised excursions combine Saklikent Gorge with nearby attractions such as Tlos Ancient City or Yakapark Nature Park, making it one of the most rewarding day trips from Fethiye.

Whether you visit for the scenery, the adventure or simply to escape the summer heat, Saklikent Gorge offers one of the most memorable natural experiences on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast.
