Frigiliana

Frigiliana is a small town in the Andalusian province of Málaga, situated in the hills of the Sierra de Almijara, a short distance inland from Nerja on the Costa del Sol. It is often recognised for its well-preserved Moorish quarter and distinctive whitewashed houses, which reflect the traditional style of the region. The town is divided into two main areas: the newer section with modern amenities and the historic old town, which retains its medieval layout.

The old town, known as Barrio Morisco-Mudéjar, consists of narrow, winding streets, cobbled alleys, and white houses adorned with colourful flowers. Many of the streets feature stone mosaics depicting historical and cultural symbols. This area is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Moorish urban design in southern Spain. Informational plaques throughout the quarter recount the history of the Morisco population and their eventual expulsion in the late 16th century.

Frigiliana is also known for its local produce and traditional crafts. The town is a centre for the production of sugarcane honey, which has been made here for centuries and remains one of the few places in Europe where it is still produced. Handcrafted pottery and textiles are also available in local shops, reflecting the town’s artisan traditions. The annual Festival of the Three Cultures highlights the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish influences on the town’s heritage through concerts, performances, and food markets.

Surrounded by the natural landscapes of the Sierra de Almijara, Frigiliana is also a starting point for hiking routes and outdoor activities. Trails from the town lead into the mountains, offering views of both the rugged terrain and the Mediterranean Sea. Its elevated position provides panoramic vistas of the coastline, particularly striking at sunset.

Frigiliana has developed a reputation as one of Andalusia’s most picturesque hill towns. While it attracts visitors for its scenery and cultural heritage, it remains a small community with a distinct character, balancing tourism with the preservation of its architectural and historical identity.
