Maspalomas Beach

Maspalomas Beach is one of the largest and most famous beaches in Gran Canaria. Stretching for several kilometres along the island’s southern coast, the beach is best known for its enormous golden sand dunes which create one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes in the Canary Islands. The combination of wide open sand, Atlantic Ocean views and year-round sunshine has made Maspalomas one of Gran Canaria’s most visited destinations for decades.

The beach forms part of the protected Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve, where constantly shifting sand dunes create a landscape that resembles a small desert beside the sea. Walking across the dunes towards the shoreline is one of the area’s most memorable experiences, particularly during the early morning or evening when the temperatures are cooler and the light creates dramatic shadows across the sand.

Unlike many smaller resort beaches, Maspalomas Beach feels vast and open. Even during busy periods there is usually plenty of space along the shoreline. Different sections of the beach attract different types of visitors, including families, naturists and watersports enthusiasts. Conditions are generally good for swimming, although stronger Atlantic currents occasionally develop depending on weather and tides.

At the western end of the beach stands the historic Maspalomas Lighthouse, one of the area’s best-known landmarks. Nearby promenades, restaurants and hotels provide easy access to facilities while still allowing the natural dune landscape to dominate much of the coastline. Sunset walks near the lighthouse are particularly popular as the evening light reflects across both the dunes and ocean.

The beach is also connected to nearby Playa del Inglés by a long uninterrupted stretch of sand, allowing visitors to walk considerable distances beside the Atlantic. Camel rides are sometimes available on the dunes, adding to the unusual desert atmosphere of the area.

Maspalomas Beach remains one of the defining images of Gran Canaria and continues to combine natural scenery, resort facilities and open coastal space better than almost anywhere else on the island.
