Pueblo de Tejeda

Pueblo de Tejeda is one of the most scenic and traditional mountain villages in Gran Canaria. Located high in the island’s volcanic interior and surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, Tejeda is frequently considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. The combination of whitewashed houses, steep ravines and towering volcanic rock formations creates a landscape completely different from Gran Canaria’s coastal resorts.

The village sits within a large volcanic basin beneath some of the island’s most famous natural landmarks including Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga. From many parts of Tejeda there are spectacular panoramic views across mountain ridges and deep valleys stretching towards the coast. During winter the cooler mountain climate often brings cloud inversions which can leave the peaks rising above a sea of clouds.

Tejeda has a quieter and more traditional atmosphere than many tourist areas on the island. Narrow streets, stone buildings and small cafés surround the village centre while local bakeries are famous for traditional almond sweets and marzipan. Almond trees grow throughout the surrounding hillsides and become especially beautiful during the flowering season early in the year.

The village also has strong historical importance connected to the island’s indigenous Guanche heritage. Nearby Roque Bentayga was once considered a sacred site by the island’s original inhabitants and archaeological remains can still be seen in the surrounding mountains.

Many visitors arrive in Tejeda as part of scenic driving routes through central Gran Canaria. The roads leading to the village pass through pine forests, volcanic landscapes and dramatic mountain viewpoints. Hiking trails around the village are also popular and provide some of the best walking scenery on the island.

For travellers wanting to experience a more rural and authentic side of Gran Canaria, Tejeda offers a striking contrast to the beaches and resort towns of the south. The combination of mountain scenery, local culture and traditional Canarian character makes it one of the island’s most rewarding inland destinations.
