Teror Old Town

Teror Old Town is one of the most historic and atmospheric places in Gran Canaria. Located in the green mountains of northern Gran Canaria, the town is famous for its traditional Canarian architecture, wooden balconies and religious importance. Unlike the beach resorts of the south, Teror offers visitors a quieter and more traditional side of the island shaped by centuries of local history and culture.

The centre of the town is built around the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino, one of the most important religious sites in the Canary Islands. According to local tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared here in the fifteenth century inside a pine tree, turning Teror into an important pilgrimage destination. Every year thousands of people travel to the town during the Fiesta del Pino, one of Gran Canaria’s largest religious festivals.

Walking through Teror’s old streets is one of the main attractions. The narrow cobbled roads are lined with whitewashed houses featuring carved wooden balconies decorated with flowers and plants. Many of these buildings date back several centuries and help preserve the traditional appearance of the town. The atmosphere feels very different from the island’s modern coastal resorts and gives visitors a stronger sense of historic Canarian life.

Sunday is one of the busiest days to visit due to Teror’s popular market. Stalls fill the streets selling local food, crafts, sweets and souvenirs. Traditional products such as chorizo de Teror, pastries and local cheeses are especially well known. Small cafés and bakeries around the town square also attract visitors looking to experience local Canarian cuisine.

The surrounding mountain scenery adds further character to Teror. Mist occasionally drifts through the hills while pine forests and green valleys surround the town, creating a cooler and more rural environment than southern Gran Canaria. The drive to Teror itself passes through dramatic volcanic landscapes and mountain roads.

For many visitors, Teror Old Town provides one of the most authentic and culturally interesting experiences on Gran Canaria and remains an essential destination beyond the island’s beaches and resorts.
