Great Walks of New Zealand

The Great Walks of New Zealand are a collection of premier hiking trails managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC), offering access to some of the country’s most stunning landscapes. These trails are well-maintained and equipped with huts and campsites, catering to a range of fitness levels and hiking experiences.

Milford Track

The Milford Track, located in Fiordland National Park, spans 53.5 kilometers and takes approximately four days to complete. Hikers will experience dramatic waterfalls, lush rainforests, and alpine passes, culminating at the iconic Milford Sound.

Routeburn Track

Covering 32 kilometers, the Routeburn Track traverses both Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks. The trail offers stunning views of valleys, lakes, and mountain peaks and typically takes two to three days to hike.

Tongariro Northern Circuit

This 43-kilometer loop in Tongariro National Park encircles Mount Ngauruhoe and features volcanic landscapes, including the famous Emerald Lakes and Red Crater. It usually takes three to four days to complete.

Kepler Track

Also in Fiordland National Park, the Kepler Track is a 60-kilometer loop designed for a three to four-day hike. It includes diverse landscapes such as beech forests, alpine ridges, and limestone formations.

Abel Tasman Coast Track

This 60-kilometer trail along the northern coast of the South Island offers golden beaches, coastal forests, and clear waters. The hike typically takes three to five days, with opportunities for swimming and kayaking.

Whanganui Journey

Unique among the Great Walks, this 145-kilometer river journey along the Whanganui River is usually completed in five days. It involves paddling through scenic gorges and past historic sites.

Heaphy Track

The Heaphy Track covers 78.4 kilometers across Kahurangi National Park and takes four to six days to complete. It features diverse ecosystems, from dense forests to rugged coastlines.

Rakiura Track

Located on Stewart Island, the Rakiura Track is a 32-kilometer loop that takes about three days to hike. It offers a chance to experience the island’s unique flora and fauna, including native birdlife.

Paparoa Track

This 55-kilometer trail in Paparoa National Park takes three days to hike. It showcases limestone landscapes, lush rainforests, and panoramic views of the Tasman Sea.
