The Milford Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, is a world-famous multi-day hike that traverses the stunning wilderness of Fiordland National Park on the South Island. Spanning a distance of 53.5 kilometers, the trek typically takes four days to complete, with well-maintained huts providing accommodation along the route. The Milford Track offers hikers an unforgettable experience, showcasing a diverse range of landscapes, including lush rainforests, alpine meadows, and glacial valleys.

Day 1: Glade Wharf to Clinton Hut (5 km)
The journey begins with a boat ride from Te Anau Downs to Glade Wharf, the starting point of the trek. From here, hikers embark on a leisurely 5-kilometer walk along the banks of the Clinton River, with an opportunity to visit the Glade House historic site. The first day concludes at the Clinton Hut, where walkers can rest and prepare for the following day’s challenges.
Day 2: Clinton Hut to Mintaro Hut (16.5 km)
The second day involves a gradual ascent through the Clinton Valley, with stunning views of surrounding peaks, waterfalls, and lush vegetation. Highlights include the Hirere Falls and the Prairie, an open grassy area with panoramic vistas. The day ends at the Mintaro Hut, nestled at the base of the Mackinnon Pass.
Day 3: Mintaro Hut to Dumpling Hut (14 km)
The most challenging and rewarding day of the trek, day three involves a steep climb to the 1,154-meter Mackinnon Pass, where hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After a visit to the Mackinnon Memorial and the Pass Hut, the track descends through a landscape of cascading waterfalls, including the impressive Sutherland Falls, before reaching the Dumpling Hut for the night.
Day 4: Dumpling Hut to Sandfly Point (18 km)
The final day of the Milford Track follows the Arthur River and the shores of Lake Ada, offering glimpses of the Milford Sound in the distance. The walk concludes at Sandfly Point, where a boat transports hikers to the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, marking the end of their journey through one of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes.
Due to the popularity of the Milford Track, bookings for huts and transport are essential during the Great Walks season, which runs from late October to late April. The trek is well-marked and maintained, but hikers should be prepared for changeable weather and equip themselves with appropriate gear and supplies.
