Joan of Arc, known in French as Jeanne d’Arc, is a national heroine of France and a canonized Catholic saint. Born in 1412 in Domrémy, a village in northeastern France, she played a key role during the later stages of the Hundred Years’ War between France and England. Her life and death remain closely associated with the city of Rouen, where she was tried and executed.
Claiming divine guidance, Joan began her mission in 1429 at the age of 17, when she sought an audience with Charles VII, the dauphin of France. She convinced him of her purpose and was granted command of a small military force. Joan’s leadership contributed to the lifting of the siege of Orléans, a turning point in the war that improved French morale and led to Charles’s coronation in Reims later that year.
Joan was eventually captured in 1430 by Burgundian forces allied with the English and handed over to the English authorities. She was imprisoned in Rouen and put on trial by a pro-English ecclesiastical court. The trial, which was politically motivated, focused on charges of heresy and cross-dressing, as she had worn male military attire. In 1431, she was declared guilty and burned at the stake in the Old Market Square (Place du Vieux-Marché) in Rouen.
A retrial held in 1456 cleared her of all charges, and in 1920 she was canonized by the Catholic Church. She is now a symbol of French unity and resistance.
In Rouen, visitors can explore multiple sites related to her life and death. The modern Church of Saint Joan of Arc stands near the location of her execution and features contemporary stained-glass windows salvaged from earlier churches. The nearby Historial Jeanne d’Arc is a museum located in the Archbishop’s Palace, offering a multimedia presentation of her trial and legacy. These sites provide historical context and commemorate her enduring significance in French history.
