Korčula is an island in southern Dalmatia, Croatia, situated in the Adriatic Sea between Split and Dubrovnik. Known for its dense forests, historic towns, and traditional culture, it is one of Croatia’s most distinctive islands. The main settlement, also called Korčula, is often referred to as “Little Dubrovnik” because of its medieval walls and red-roofed houses. The island has been influenced by Illyrian, Greek, Roman, Venetian, and later Croatian rule, giving it a layered cultural identity.

The old town of Korčula is laid out in a fishbone pattern, with narrow streets designed to provide shade and shelter from coastal winds. At its centre is St. Mark’s Cathedral, a Gothic-Renaissance structure built from local limestone, noted for its detailed portal and bell tower. The Bishop’s Treasury nearby contains religious art and artefacts, while the town’s fortified walls and towers reflect its strategic importance during the Venetian period.
Tradition and folklore remain central to the island’s character. Korčula is known for the Moreška, a sword dance performed since the 16th century that symbolises the struggle between Christians and Moors. Festivals, music, and crafts continue to preserve local identity, making the island notable for its intangible heritage as well as its architecture.
The island’s landscape is varied, with vineyards, olive groves, and pine forests alongside coves and beaches. Korčula has a long history of wine production, particularly of the white wine varieties Pošip and Grk, cultivated in Lumbarda and other villages. The surrounding Adriatic waters provide opportunities for sailing and swimming, while the smaller settlements around the island retain traditional architecture and ways of life.
Korčula’s combination of medieval urban fabric, cultural traditions, and natural setting ensures its continuing importance as a destination in Dalmatia. Its historic town offers insight into Venetian influence, while its villages and landscapes highlight the persistence of local identity. Together, these elements make Korčula one of Croatia’s most distinctive and historically significant islands.
