Manhattan Beach and Pier

Manhattan Beach, located in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, is a coastal community known for its sandy shoreline, recreational facilities, and relaxed atmosphere. The beach extends for more than two miles along the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by a paved pedestrian and cycling path, the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, which connects it to neighbouring beach cities. The area is popular for swimming, surfing, beach volleyball, and sunbathing, with lifeguard stations positioned along the shore.

At the western end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard stands the Manhattan Beach Pier, a structure extending nearly 300 metres into the ocean. Built in 1920 and designated a California Historical Landmark, the pier features Mediterranean-style architecture and a small roundhouse at its terminus. The Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium, located inside, offers free admission and displays on local marine life, along with educational programs for children and visitors.

Beach volleyball is a central feature of Manhattan Beach, with numerous permanent courts lining the sand. The city hosts the Manhattan Beach Open, one of the most prominent professional beach volleyball tournaments in the United States. The beach also supports fishing from the pier and recreational activities such as paddleboarding and bodyboarding.

Downtown Manhattan Beach, located a short walk from the pier, contains a mix of restaurants, cafés, and boutique shops. Many establishments offer outdoor seating and ocean views, contributing to the area’s appeal for both residents and visitors. Public parks, including the Veterans Parkway greenbelt, provide additional walking and cycling opportunities.

Parking is available in metered spaces, public lots, and nearby residential streets, though demand can be high during peak seasons and weekends. The beach is accessible by car from major Los Angeles freeways, and public transport connections are available via local bus services.

Combining a historic pier, active recreation, and a well-developed dining and shopping district, Manhattan Beach and its pier remain a popular coastal destination within the Los Angeles metropolitan area, offering a blend of leisure activities and oceanfront scenery.
