Monte Toboggan Run

The Monte Toboggan Run is a traditional form of downhill transportation in Funchal, Madeira, that has become a well-known tourist attraction. The activity involves riding in a wicker sledge, known locally as a “carro de cesto,” which descends from Monte to the Livramento area of Funchal. The toboggan run covers a distance of approximately two kilometres and takes around 10 minutes to complete.

The practice originated in the mid-19th century as a means for residents of Monte to travel quickly down to Funchal. Over time, it evolved into a recreational activity primarily aimed at visitors. The sledges are made from wicker and mounted on wooden runners. They are operated by two men, known as “carreiros,” who wear traditional white uniforms and straw hats. The carreiros steer and brake the sledge using thick rubber-soled boots and ropes, relying on gravity for propulsion.

The starting point is located near the Church of Our Lady of Monte and the Monte Cable Car station. Tickets for the ride can be purchased on-site. The descent travels along public roads that are closed to other vehicles during operating hours. The route includes several turns and gradual slopes, passing residential and urban areas before reaching the endpoint in Livramento, a suburb of Funchal.

At the end of the run, visitors can return to the city centre on foot, by taxi, or by local bus. It is important to note that the toboggan does not return to Monte, and a separate return journey must be arranged.

The Monte Toboggan Run operates year-round, though it may close during periods of heavy rain or poor weather. It is one of the most distinctive experiences offered in Madeira and is considered a unique form of transport rather than a theme park ride.

The activity is supervised for safety, and while relatively short, it remains one of the more memorable ways to descend from Monte, combining historical tradition with a form of cultural tourism that continues to be popular among visitors.
