Funchal Cable Car to Monte

The Funchal Cable Car, also known as the Teleférico do Funchal, provides a direct link between the city centre of Funchal and the hillside district of Monte. Opened in 2000, the cable car system was constructed to replace the historic Monte Railway, which ceased operations in the mid-20th century. The current route begins near the Funchal waterfront at the Almirante Reis Park and travels approximately 3.2 kilometres uphill to Monte.

The cable car journey lasts around 15 minutes and ascends over 500 metres, offering continuous views of Funchal’s urban layout, the surrounding mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean. The system consists of enclosed gondolas that can accommodate up to seven passengers each. These operate at regular intervals throughout the day, providing a steady and efficient mode of transport for both tourists and local residents.

Monte is known for its cooler climate, gardens, and historical buildings. The cable car arrival point is located within short walking distance of several key attractions, including the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, the Church of Our Lady of Monte, and the departure point for the traditional Monte toboggan ride.

The Funchal Cable Car operates year-round, with reduced hours during holidays or periods of maintenance. It is one of the most accessible ways to reach Monte without using private vehicles or navigating the winding roads by bus.

Functioning as both a form of public transportation and a scenic attraction, the cable car plays an important role in the tourism landscape of Funchal. It is commonly used as the starting point for day trips that explore the elevated areas of the city and provides a practical connection between urban Funchal and its garden-dominated hillsides.
