Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a major attraction in Funchal, Madeira, located in the Monte district on the slopes above the city. Covering around 70,000 square metres, the garden is situated on the grounds of a former luxury hotel, the Monte Palace, which operated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The current garden was developed in the late 20th century by José Berardo, a Madeiran entrepreneur, who transformed the site into a public garden and cultural space.

The garden features a wide range of exotic plants from various parts of the world, including cycads, azaleas, proteas, and tree ferns. Many of these species originate from regions such as South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The garden also includes a large collection of Madeira’s endemic plants. Its layout includes winding footpaths, small waterfalls, koi-filled ponds, and tiled courtyards.

One of the notable features of the garden is the presence of two Oriental gardens that draw influence from Japanese and Chinese landscaping traditions. These include red bridges, pagoda-style structures, and stone lanterns, creating a strong visual contrast with the surrounding subtropical vegetation.

The Monte Palace Museum, located on the grounds, houses collections of African stone sculptures and minerals from around the world. The African art is primarily from Zimbabwe and consists of both traditional and contemporary works. The mineral collection includes thousands of specimens from countries such as Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, and Argentina.

Scattered throughout the garden are decorative panels made of azulejos—traditional Portuguese painted tiles—many of which depict historical or religious scenes. Statues, sculptures, and inscriptions in various languages add to the eclectic aesthetic of the site.

Visitors can access Monte Palace Tropical Garden via the Funchal cable car, which travels from the city centre to Monte, offering views over Funchal Bay. The garden is adjacent to other notable sites such as the Monte Church and the toboggan run.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden combines botanical interest, artistic displays, and cultural elements in a single location, making it one of Funchal’s most distinctive attractions.
