Duomo di Milano

The Duomo di Milano is the cathedral church of Milan and one of the most recognisable landmarks in Italy. Located in the city centre, the cathedral is dedicated to the Nativity of St Mary and serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Milan. It is noted for its size, architectural complexity, and extensive use of white Candoglia marble.

Construction began in 1386 under the direction of Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo and continued for nearly six centuries, incorporating various architectural styles. The predominant style is Gothic, with influences from French Rayonnant, Flamboyant, and German Gothic traditions. The cathedral’s façade, completed in the 19th century during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, features elaborate spires, pinnacles, and statues.

The interior of the Duomo is vast, with a length of 157 metres and a nave height of 45 metres, making it one of the largest churches in the world by volume. It contains numerous artworks, including stained glass windows, altars, and sculptures. The cathedral houses the tombs of several archbishops and a large crucifix attributed to Leonardo da Vinci’s workshop.

One of the key attractions is the rooftop, accessible by stairs or lift, where visitors can walk among the spires and view the intricate details of the architecture up close. The rooftop also provides panoramic views of Milan and, on clear days, the Alps.

The Duomo is also home to the Holy Nail, said to be one of the nails from the Crucifixion, which is displayed annually in a special ceremony. A museum adjacent to the cathedral contains artefacts related to its construction and history.

The Piazza del Duomo, where the cathedral is situated, is a major public space surrounded by significant buildings, including the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The cathedral is easily accessible by public transport and is open to visitors year-round, with separate tickets required for entry, rooftop access, and the museum.

The Duomo di Milano is a major religious, historical, and architectural site, reflecting the artistic and civic aspirations of Milan over several centuries.
