The walled town is dominated by its impressive castle, Castelo de Óbidos. Built during the 12th century, this castle now serves as a hotel under the Portuguese pousadas network, offering visitors the opportunity to stay within its historic walls. Surrounding the castle is the ancient fortification, the town walls, which can be walked for panoramic views of the countryside and the town’s terracotta rooftops.

The main thoroughfare, Rua Direita, leads visitors from the entrance gates to the castle. Lined with traditional whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea and azulejos (decorative ceramic tiles), this street hosts a variety of small shops selling local crafts, souvenirs, and the town’s signature cherry liqueur, Ginjinha d’Óbidos. The street also features several cafes and restaurants serving regional Portuguese cuisine.

Óbidos is home to several notable churches, including Santa Maria, the town’s main church. This church is not only an architectural highlight with its Baroque interior and beautiful tilework but also historically significant as the site of the marriage of King Afonso V in the 15th century.

The town hosts a variety of annual events, such as the Óbidos Medieval Market in July, which recreates historical scenes, and the International Chocolate Festival in spring. These events contribute to Óbidos’ reputation as a cultural destination while maintaining its historical charm.
