The Snowdon Mountain Railway is one of Wales‘ most famous visitor attractions, carrying passengers from Llanberis towards the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) since 1896. Climbing almost 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) through the spectacular landscapes of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, it offers one of Britain’s most scenic railway journeys and provides an alternative to walking Wales’ highest mountain.
The railway follows a narrow-gauge track for approximately 7.6 kilometres (4.7 miles), passing waterfalls, rocky mountainsides and sweeping views across the surrounding valleys. The journey takes around one hour in each direction, allowing passengers to enjoy the changing scenery as the train steadily climbs towards the summit.
For many visitors, the railway provides the opportunity to experience Yr Wyddfa without undertaking the demanding walk to the top. It is particularly popular with families, older visitors and anyone wishing to enjoy the mountain scenery from the comfort of a traditional mountain railway.
Although the railway has been modernised over the years, it still retains much of the character that has made it one of Wales’ best-loved attractions for more than a century.
Our recommendation: Book tickets well in advance, particularly during weekends, school holidays and the summer months. Morning departures often provide the best chance of clear views before cloud develops over the summit.

Snowdon Mountain Railway Highlights
A Historic Mountain Railway
Opened in 1896, the Snowdon Mountain Railway is Britain’s only public rack-and-pinion mountain railway. Purpose-built to climb the steep slopes of Yr Wyddfa, it has carried millions of visitors to the summit and remains one of the country’s most distinctive railway journeys.
Spectacular Mountain Scenery
The route climbs steadily from Llanberis through the heart of Eryri National Park, passing waterfalls, mountain streams and dramatic rocky landscapes. As the train gains height, passengers enjoy increasingly impressive views across Llyn Padarn, the Llanberis Pass and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Hafod Eryri Summit Visitor Centre
During the main operating season and when weather conditions allow, trains continue to the summit where passengers can visit Hafod Eryri, the modern summit visitor centre. Here you’ll usually find a café, toilets and spectacular panoramic views across North Wales.
Please note that the summit building only opens when the railway is operating and conditions are suitable.
Historic Steam and Diesel Trains
Most services today are operated by modern diesel locomotives, although traditional steam locomotives continue to operate on selected services during the season. Whichever train you travel on, the experience remains one of Britain’s most memorable mountain railway journeys.
Before You Travel
The railway normally operates between spring and autumn, although exact dates vary each year. Services are weather dependent, and during poor conditions trains may terminate at Clogwyn Station rather than continuing to the summit.
Advance booking is strongly recommended, particularly during summer, as many departures sell out well before the day of travel.
Visitors should also remember that conditions at the summit are often much colder than in Llanberis. Even on warm summer days it’s worth taking a waterproof jacket and an extra layer if you plan to leave the train at the top.
Our Recommendation
The Snowdon Mountain Railway is one of the best ways to experience Yr Wyddfa if you don’t want to undertake the six to eight-hour walk to the summit. It also makes an excellent addition to a visit to Llanberis, where it can easily be combined with the National Slate Museum, Llyn Padarn and Dolbadarn Castle for a full day’s sightseeing.
If you’re hoping to enjoy the famous summit views, book an early train and choose a day with a good weather forecast. Even if the summit is hidden by cloud, the journey through the mountains is an experience in itself.
