Icod de los Vinos

Icod de los Vinos is one of the most historic towns in Tenerife and is best known as the home of the famous Dragon Tree, one of the island’s most recognisable natural landmarks. Located on Tenerife’s northwestern coast beneath the slopes of Mount Teide, the town combines colonial architecture, wine-growing traditions and spectacular volcanic scenery, making it one of the most rewarding cultural destinations in northern Tenerife.

Founded in the sixteenth century shortly after the Spanish conquest of the island, Icod developed as an important agricultural centre. The fertile volcanic soil surrounding the town proved ideal for vineyards, and wine production became one of the foundations of the local economy. The town’s name, which translates as “Icod of the Wines”, reflects this long-standing connection to viticulture that continues today.

The most famous attraction is undoubtedly the Drago Milenario, often referred to as the Dragon Tree of Icod. Although its exact age remains uncertain, the tree is believed to be several hundred years old and is considered one of the oldest and largest dragon trees in the world. For centuries it has been a symbol of Tenerife and remains one of the island’s most visited natural landmarks. Local legends once claimed that the red sap produced by the tree was the blood of dragons, adding to its mystique.

Away from the Dragon Tree, Icod contains a charming historic centre filled with traditional Canarian architecture, churches and attractive plazas. Walking through the old town reveals elegant balconies, colonial buildings and small cafés where visitors can experience a more traditional side of Tenerife.

The surrounding landscape is equally impressive. Vineyards, banana plantations and volcanic terrain stretch towards the coast while Mount Teide rises dramatically inland. Nearby attractions such as the Cueva del Viento lava tube and Garachico make the town an excellent base for exploring this part of the island.

Despite its popularity, Icod retains a relaxed and authentic atmosphere. The combination of history, nature and local culture offers a welcome contrast to Tenerife’s larger resort areas.

For many visitors, Icod de los Vinos provides one of the most interesting and historically rich experiences on the island, combining Tenerife’s natural and cultural heritage in a single destination.
