Los Gigantes

Los Gigantes is one of the most spectacular coastal destinations in Tenerife and is famous for the enormous cliffs that rise dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean along the island’s western coast. Known as Acantilados de Los Gigantes, these towering volcanic walls reach heights of up to 600 metres and are among the most impressive natural landmarks in the Canary Islands.

The name Los Gigantes means “The Giants”, a fitting description for cliffs that appear to rise almost vertically from the sea. The indigenous Guanche people regarded them with awe and referred to them as the “Wall of Hell” because they seemed to form an impassable barrier along the coastline. Today, they remain one of Tenerife’s most recognisable landscapes and attract visitors from across the world.

The modern resort town sits beside a marina at the base of the cliffs and offers a much more relaxed atmosphere than the larger resorts of Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas. Restaurants, cafés and waterfront promenades provide excellent views of the surrounding scenery while the marina serves as the departure point for many of the area’s most popular excursions.

One of the best ways to appreciate the scale of the cliffs is from the sea. Boat trips operate throughout the year, taking visitors along the coastline beneath the towering rock faces. These excursions often combine sightseeing with opportunities to swim, snorkel or observe marine wildlife.

The waters surrounding Los Gigantes are also among the best places in Europe for whale and dolphin watching. Resident populations of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins can often be seen throughout the year, making wildlife cruises one of the area’s most popular activities.

Although best known for its cliffs, Los Gigantes also offers pleasant beaches and natural swimming areas. The volcanic black-sand beach near the marina provides a striking contrast to the blue Atlantic, while nearby coves and natural pools offer quieter places to swim.

The town’s location also makes it an excellent base for exploring western Tenerife, including Masca Valley, Teide National Park and the Teno Mountains.

For many visitors, Los Gigantes combines dramatic scenery, wildlife encounters and a relaxed coastal atmosphere, making it one of the most memorable destinations on Tenerife.
