The Knights of St. John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, were a medieval Catholic military order founded in the early 12th century. Their full name is the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, reflecting their origins as a hospitaller group dedicated to caring for sick and poor pilgrims in the Holy Land.
Origins and Early History
The order was established around 1099, during the First Crusade, when a group of monks associated with the Benedictine tradition founded a hospital in Jerusalem. The hospital was dedicated to St. John the Baptist, and its primary mission was to provide care for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. Over time, the order evolved to include a military component, defending the Christian territories in the Holy Land against Muslim forces.
Military Role
As the Knights Hospitaller, the order became one of the key military forces during the Crusades, alongside other orders like the Knights Templar and the Teutonic Knights. They established a network of fortifications and hospitals across the Crusader states. After the fall of Jerusalem in 1187, the order relocated its headquarters to Acre, and later, after Acre fell in 1291, to Cyprus.
Rhodes and Malta
In 1309, the Knights Hospitaller seized the island of Rhodes, which they ruled as a sovereign state. They fortified the island and successfully defended it against multiple sieges by the Ottomans. However, in 1522, the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent conquered Rhodes, forcing the knights to relocate again.
In 1530, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V granted the knights the island of Malta, where they became known as the Knights of Malta. They turned Malta into a formidable fortress, famously defending it against the Ottoman siege of 1565. Under their rule, Malta became a thriving center of commerce and culture.
Decline and Modern Legacy
The order’s sovereignty ended in 1798 when Napoleon Bonaparte captured Malta. The knights were dispersed, but the order survived in various forms. Today, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta continues as a Catholic lay religious order, focused on humanitarian and medical work worldwide.
Contributions and Legacy
The Knights of St. John were instrumental in the military defense of Christian territories during the Crusades and played a significant role in the medical care and charitable work of the time. Their fortifications, particularly in Rhodes and Malta, are significant historical and architectural landmarks, and their legacy continues through the humanitarian activities of the modern order.
