Palace House

Palace House is one of the finest historic houses in the New Forest and has been the home of the Montagu family for more than 500 years. Standing within the Beaulieu estate, the house was built on the site of the medieval gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Today, it remains the family home of Lord Montagu while also welcoming visitors to explore its beautifully preserved interiors and gardens.

The house combines medieval origins with Victorian elegance, reflecting the tastes and lifestyles of successive generations of the Montagu family. Richly furnished reception rooms, fine portraits, antique furniture and historic memorabilia provide an insight into the lives of one of England’s distinguished aristocratic families.

Highlights of Palace House

Historic State Rooms

Visitors can explore a series of elegant rooms that have been carefully furnished with paintings, ceramics, furniture and decorative arts collected over several centuries. Many of the rooms retain their Victorian appearance, giving a fascinating impression of life in a grand country house during the 19th century.

The Montagu Family

Unlike many stately homes, Palace House is still a private family residence. Throughout the house, exhibitions and photographs tell the story of the Montagu family and their long association with Beaulieu, including the creation of the National Motor Museum by Edward, Lord Montagu.

Gardens and Grounds

The attractive gardens surrounding Palace House overlook the Beaulieu River and provide a peaceful setting for a stroll. Colourful flower borders, mature trees and carefully maintained lawns complement the historic architecture, while the wider Beaulieu estate offers extensive grounds to explore between visits to the house, abbey and museum.

Visitor Information

Palace House is included within admission to the Beaulieu estate, alongside the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu Abbey and the estate grounds. Most visitors spend around 45 minutes to an hour exploring the house before continuing to the other attractions.
