Rhinefield Ornamental Drive

Rhinefield Ornamental Drive is one of the most scenic routes through the New Forest National Park, winding through magnificent woodland filled with towering conifers, ancient beech trees and some of the tallest trees in Britain. Originally created during the Victorian era as part of a programme of ornamental woodland planting, the drive remains one of the best places to experience the beauty of the New Forest throughout the year.

Located a few kilometres south of Lyndhurst and close to Brockenhurst, the drive passes through an impressive collection of native and exotic trees planted during the 19th century. Unlike many parts of the New Forest, where open heathland dominates the landscape, Rhinefield offers a dense woodland environment that feels almost cathedral-like beneath its towering trees.

Several of the area’s best attractions are found along or close to the drive, including the famous Tall Trees Trail, Blackwater Arboretum and the impressive Rhinefield House Hotel. Together they provide opportunities for walking, photography, wildlife watching and simply enjoying one of the New Forest’s most peaceful landscapes.

Although Rhinefield Ornamental Drive is beautiful at any time of year, it is particularly spectacular during autumn when the woodland is transformed by brilliant shades of gold, orange and red. Spring also brings fresh green foliage and carpets of woodland flowers, making this one of the most rewarding places to explore in every season.

Best Things to Do Along Rhinefield Ornamental Drive

Drive One of the New Forest’s Most Scenic Roads

The drive itself is one of the highlights of the New Forest. Quiet roads weave through mature woodland beneath enormous Douglas firs, beech trees and redwoods, creating an ever-changing landscape that feels very different from the park’s open heathland.

There are several small parking areas along the route, allowing visitors to stop and enjoy short walks, admire the impressive trees or simply appreciate the peaceful woodland surroundings. Early morning and late afternoon are particularly rewarding, when shafts of sunlight filter through the forest canopy.

Visit Blackwater Arboretum

Blackwater Arboretum is one of the New Forest’s finest collections of ornamental trees and forms one of the highlights of the Rhinefield area. Established during the early 20th century, the arboretum contains species from across Europe, North America and Asia, creating an impressive collection that changes dramatically with the seasons.

Easy walking paths lead through the arboretum beneath towering conifers, colourful maples and magnificent ornamental trees, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. Autumn is especially popular, when the brilliant colours attract photographers from across southern England.

Visit Rhinefield House

Hidden among the trees, Rhinefield House is one of the New Forest’s most impressive buildings. Completed in 1887 as a country house for the Walker family, the mansion combines Tudor and Gothic Revival architecture with elaborate stone carvings, timber-framed gables and striking chimneys, earning it the nickname “The Jewel in the Forest.”

Today, Rhinefield House operates as a luxury hotel, but visitors are welcome to admire its impressive exterior, enjoy afternoon tea or lunch in the restaurant, or relax with a drink while overlooking the surrounding woodland. Even if you are not staying overnight, it is well worth stopping to appreciate one of the New Forest’s finest historic buildings.
