St. Stephen’s Basilica

St. Stephen’s Basilica, located in the heart of Budapest, is one of Hungary’s most important religious and architectural landmarks. Named after Hungary’s first king, Saint Stephen, the basilica was constructed between 1851 and 1905, reflecting a combination of neo-Classical and neo-Renaissance styles. The design was initiated by József Hild, later continued by Miklós Ybl, and ultimately completed by József Kauser following a series of delays and structural challenges.

The basilica stands 96 meters tall, symbolizing the founding year of Hungary (896) and matching the height of the Hungarian Parliament Building, underscoring the balance between church and state. This makes it one of the tallest structures in Budapest, offering visitors panoramic views from its dome, accessible via a combination of stairs and an elevator.

Inside, the basilica features a richly decorated interior with marble columns, gilded details, and intricate mosaics. The central dome, adorned with depictions of biblical scenes, is a testament to Hungary’s religious artistry. Among the most notable treasures housed within the basilica is the mummified right hand of St. Stephen, known as the Holy Right Hand, which is displayed in a reliquary in the Chapel of the Holy Right. This relic is considered a sacred artifact and is revered by many Hungarian Catholics.

The square in front of the basilica, Szent István tér, is a lively area lined with cafes and restaurants. Seasonal events, such as Christmas markets, enhance the basilica’s role as a focal point of both religious and community life in Budapest.

St. Stephen’s Basilica remains a symbol of Hungary’s spiritual and cultural heritage, attracting visitors with its historical significance, architectural beauty, and commanding presence in the city’s skyline.
