Cassis is a small town located on the Mediterranean coast in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southern France. It lies east of Marseille and is situated between the Calanques National Park and the Cap Canaille, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. The town is known for its compact port, limestone cliffs, and surrounding vineyards.
The town’s origins trace back to antiquity, with evidence of Ligurian and Roman settlements. It developed as a fishing village and later expanded through trade and quarrying, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Cassis stone, a distinctive pale limestone, was used in the construction of numerous buildings and ports, including projects abroad. Though the quarrying industry has declined, the stone remains a notable aspect of the town’s heritage.

The Vieux Port (Old Port) serves as the central hub of Cassis, featuring a semicircular harbour lined with traditional pastel-coloured buildings and small fishing boats. While still operational for local fishermen, the port also accommodates leisure craft and tour boats that provide access to the Calanques—narrow fjord-like inlets bordered by steep limestone cliffs. These formations are accessible by boat, footpaths, or kayak, and are protected as part of the Calanques National Park, which spans between Marseille and Cassis.

Cap Canaille rises prominently to the east of Cassis and offers panoramic views of the coastline. A scenic route, the Route des Crêtes, connects Cassis to the nearby town of La Ciotat and allows for elevated viewpoints over the cliffs and sea.

Viticulture is another key aspect of the local economy. Cassis is one of the first appellations to receive AOC status in France, with vineyards producing white and rosé wines. The terraced vineyards surrounding the town contribute to the area’s agricultural landscape.

Cassis combines geological features, historical elements, and maritime activity. Its location makes it a base for coastal hiking, access to the Calanques, and exploration of the Provençal hinterland.
