Mitad del Mundo is a monument and visitor complex located north of Quito, marking the approximate position of the equator. The site was established in the 20th century to commemorate the French Geodesic Mission of the 18th century, which carried out measurements in the region to determine the shape of the Earth. The name translates as “Middle of the World,” reflecting its association with the equatorial line.

The main feature of the site is a large stone monument topped with a globe, designed to mark latitude 0°00′00″. A painted line runs through the complex, allowing visitors to stand with one foot in each hemisphere. Although modern GPS measurements have shown that the true equatorial line lies slightly north of the monument, the site remains a symbolic representation of the equator and continues to attract visitors.
Inside the monument is a small museum spread across several levels. Exhibits focus on Ecuador’s geography, indigenous cultures and the history of the geodesic mission. Displays include traditional clothing, tools and information about different regions of the country. The upper levels provide views of the surrounding landscape and the nearby town.
The wider complex includes a range of additional attractions, such as small museums, cultural displays and demonstrations related to equatorial phenomena. These often include experiments intended to illustrate the effects of being at the equator, although some are presented in a simplified or interpretive manner for visitors.
Mitad del Mundo is easily accessible from Quito and is commonly visited as a half-day trip. The surrounding area has been developed to accommodate tourism, with shops, restaurants and public spaces. While the monument itself is not located exactly on the equator, its historical and symbolic significance make it one of the most recognised attractions in Ecuador.
Today, Mitad del Mundo functions as both an educational site and a cultural landmark, offering insight into scientific exploration as well as national identity.
