Swanage Railway

Swanage Railway is a heritage steam railway operating between the coastal town of Swanage and Norden in the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset. The line originally formed part of the London and South Western Railway network and opened in the late 19th century. Passenger services ceased in 1972, after which the track was dismantled. Restoration began in the 1970s through volunteer efforts, and the railway gradually reopened in sections.

Today the line extends for approximately 10 kilometres, passing through rural Purbeck countryside. Trains operate using restored steam and diesel locomotives, with period-style carriages reflecting mid-20th-century British rail travel. Corfe Castle station, located midway along the route, is one of the principal stops. From the platform, passengers have direct views of Corfe Castle, which stands prominently above the village.

The railway connects the seaside town of Swanage with the outskirts of the Isle of Purbeck, offering an alternative to road travel during peak visitor seasons. Services typically operate from spring to autumn, with special event days and themed journeys held throughout the year. The line links to mainline services at Wareham on selected dates, providing limited integration with the national rail network.

Swanage Railway functions both as a transport attraction and as a working museum. Stations are maintained in traditional style, with period signage and preserved infrastructure. The experience emphasises historical railway operation rather than high-speed travel.

The route passes through open fields, heathland and wooded sections characteristic of the Purbeck landscape. For visitors exploring Dorset’s Jurassic Coast or the surrounding countryside, the railway offers a structured way to move between Swanage, Corfe Castle and nearby walking routes without relying exclusively on private vehicles.

Swanage Railway represents a broader movement of heritage railway preservation in Britain. It reflects volunteer-led restoration, local engagement and interest in maintaining industrial-era infrastructure as part of regional cultural identity.
