Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on Madeira Island, with an elevation of 1,862 metres above sea level. Located in the central mountainous region of the island, it offers extensive panoramic views across the surrounding ridgelines, valleys, and coastline. The summit is accessible only on foot and is a key destination for hiking and nature tourism in Madeira.
There are two main routes to reach Pico Ruivo. The most challenging and scenic approach begins at Pico do Arieiro and follows the PR1 trail, which includes steep ascents, tunnels, and narrow ridges. This route is approximately 11 kilometres round trip and requires a high level of fitness. A shorter and more accessible option starts at Achada do Teixeira via the PR1.2 trail. This route is around 6 kilometres round trip and follows a wide, well-maintained path, making it suitable for most walkers.
The summit area of Pico Ruivo includes a small shelter and viewing platform. On clear days, visitors can see as far as the eastern and western coasts, as well as neighbouring peaks such as Pico das Torres and Pico do Arieiro. Weather conditions can change rapidly, with temperatures at the summit significantly lower than at sea level, and cloud cover often forming in the afternoon.
Pico Ruivo lies within the Laurisilva forest zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, although the higher elevations are above the forest line and characterised by low vegetation and exposed volcanic rock. The surrounding area supports endemic plant species and provides habitat for native birdlife, including kestrels and firecrests.
Due to its elevation and restricted access, there are no roadways or facilities at the summit. Hikers are advised to carry sufficient water, wear appropriate footwear, and be prepared for changing conditions. Early starts are recommended for clearer views and to avoid midday heat in summer.
Pico Ruivo is considered one of Madeira’s most rewarding hikes, combining geological features, ecological value, and extensive visibility. It remains a prominent landmark in the island’s interior and a focal point for outdoor recreation.
