Butterfly Valley Beach

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi) is one of the most spectacular natural attractions on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast. Hidden beneath towering limestone cliffs that rise more than 350 metres above the sea, this secluded valley combines dramatic scenery, crystal-clear water and a sense of remoteness rarely found along the Mediterranean coast. Located a short distance south of Oludeniz, Butterfly Valley has become one of the region’s most photographed destinations and is a highlight of many boat trips exploring the Gulf of Fethiye.

The valley takes its name from the many species of butterflies that inhabit the area, including the rare Jersey Tiger Butterfly, which can often be seen during the warmer months. The combination of freshwater streams, dense vegetation and a protected microclimate has created an important natural habitat that contrasts sharply with the dry, rocky mountains surrounding it.

At the foot of the valley lies a small pebble and sand beach washed by remarkably clear turquoise water. Swimming and snorkelling are popular, while the dramatic cliffs provide an unforgettable backdrop. The beach itself remains largely undeveloped, helping preserve the area’s natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere despite its popularity with visitors.

Behind the beach, a narrow path follows a small stream inland through the valley. The walk passes beneath shady trees and over wooden bridges before reaching a seasonal waterfall hidden deep within the gorge. During spring and early summer, the waterfall is usually at its most impressive, although it can become much smaller during the hottest months of the year.

Most visitors arrive by boat from Oludeniz, with daily excursions stopping for swimming and time to explore the beach. It is also possible to reach the valley via a steep hiking trail descending from the cliffs above. However, this route is challenging and should only be attempted by experienced hikers with suitable footwear, as sections are rocky, exposed and require careful footing.

Butterfly Valley has long attracted independent travellers looking for a quieter side of the Turquoise Coast. A small eco-campsite offers simple accommodation in tents and wooden bungalows, allowing visitors to stay overnight after the day-trip boats have departed. Even so, strict planning controls have helped protect the valley from large-scale development.

Whether you arrive by boat, enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear water or simply admire the spectacular scenery from the beach, Butterfly Valley remains one of Turkey’s most unforgettable natural landscapes and one of the highlights of the Fethiye region.
