Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai)

Big Buddha Hill, officially known as Wat Phra Yai, is one of the most prominent religious landmarks in Pattaya. The temple complex sits on Pratumnak Hill, a small elevated area located between Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach. From this position the site offers views over the surrounding coastline and city, making it both an important Buddhist temple and a popular viewpoint.

The main feature of the temple is a large golden Buddha statue that sits at the top of a wide staircase. The statue rises approximately 18 metres high and depicts the Buddha in a seated meditation posture. It was built in the 1970s and has since become one of the most recognisable religious monuments in Pattaya. The figure is visible from several parts of the city and serves as a symbol of the local Buddhist community.

Visitors approach the temple by climbing a staircase flanked by large naga serpent railings, a common feature in Thai temple architecture. At the base of the steps are stalls selling flowers, incense and small offerings that local worshippers use when visiting the shrine. Many visitors light incense or place lotus flowers before the statue as part of traditional Buddhist merit-making practices.

The temple grounds contain several additional statues and smaller shrines. A row of Buddha images representing different days of the week stands on one side of the complex, reflecting the Thai tradition of associating each day with a particular Buddha posture. Visitors often place coins into the bowls of these statues as a symbolic act of making merit.

Because of its hilltop location, Wat Phra Yai also functions as a viewpoint. The surrounding terraces offer clear views across Pattaya Bay, Jomtien Beach and the nearby islands in the Gulf of Thailand. The site is particularly attractive in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and the light is softer.
