Prague Astronomical Clock

The Prague Astronomical Clock, or Pražský orloj, is an iconic medieval timepiece located on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall in Prague’s Old Town Square. First installed in 1410, it is one of the oldest astronomical clocks still in operation and a significant historical and technological marvel.

The clock features three main components: the astronomical dial, the calendar dial, and the “Walk of the Apostles.” The astronomical dial displays the positions of the sun and moon relative to the Earth and includes various astronomical details such as the zodiacal ring and Old Czech time markings. The calendar dial, added in the 19th century, features medallions representing the months of the year, painted by Czech artist Josef Mánes.

Every hour, on the hour, the clock performs a show known as the “Walk of the Apostles.” This spectacle features figures of the Apostles, who appear in the windows above the astronomical dial. Accompanying the Apostles are other moving figures, including the Skeleton, symbolizing Death, which strikes the time, and figures representing Vanity, Greed, and Lust. The show concludes with the crowing of a golden rooster and the ringing of the clock tower’s bell.

The clock has undergone several restorations and repairs throughout its long history, with significant refurbishments in the 16th and 20th centuries to preserve its intricate mechanism and historical accuracy. Modern updates have ensured that the clock remains operational and continues to attract numerous visitors.
