Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona, an elegant and lively square situated in the heart of Rome, Italy, is a popular destination that enchants visitors with its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. Established in the 1st century AD as a stadium by Emperor Domitian, the site once hosted athletic competitions and was later transformed into a public square during the Baroque period under Pope Innocent X.

Stretching approximately 240 meters in length and 65 meters in width, Piazza Navona retains the elliptical shape of the original stadium and is surrounded by impressive Baroque buildings, including the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone and the Palazzo Pamphilj. The square is also home to three magnificent fountains, which contribute to its distinct character and allure.

The central and most famous of these fountains is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1651. This elaborate masterpiece represents the four great rivers of the world at the time – the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Rio de la Plata – and is crowned by an ancient Egyptian obelisk. The other two fountains, Fontana del Moro and Fontana del Nettuno, are equally captivating, with intricate sculptures and cascading water features.
