Seven Sisters Country Park

Seven Sisters Country Park is located in East Sussex, within the South Downs National Park, and is named after the striking chalk cliffs that form part of the Sussex Heritage Coast. The park covers over 280 hectares and includes a mix of chalk grassland, river valley, and coastal habitats. It is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is managed for both conservation and public access.

The park’s most distinctive feature is the line of seven white chalk cliffs that rise dramatically from the English Channel. These cliffs are a continuation of the South Downs and are composed of soft, erosion-prone chalk, giving them their bright white appearance. They are frequently used as a natural backdrop in media, and are often associated with classic views of the English coastline.

Seven Sisters Country Park is popular with walkers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts. The South Downs Way, a long-distance footpath, passes through the area, and there are several shorter circular walking routes suitable for a range of abilities. Trails often follow the meandering Cuckmere River, which runs through the park to its mouth at Cuckmere Haven, offering views of the cliffs and estuary.

The park provides habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna. Chalk grasslands support rare wildflowers and butterfly species, while the river valley and wetland areas attract wading birds and waterfowl. The park is also home to grazing livestock, which play a role in maintaining the natural grassland environment.

Facilities in the park include a visitor centre housed in the refurbished Exceat Farm buildings. The centre offers maps, information, and a café. Canoeing and paddleboarding are available on the Cuckmere River, and the park is also accessible to wheelchair users in some areas.

Seven Sisters Country Park combines natural beauty, ecological significance, and recreational opportunities, making it a notable destination on the South Coast of England. It remains unspoilt by major development and is often visited by those seeking a quiet and scenic coastal landscape.
