The Llanberis Path is the longest and most gradual of the six main routes to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), making it one of the most popular choices for first-time walkers. Beginning in the village of Llanberis, the route follows the lower slopes of Wales‘ highest mountain before gradually climbing towards the summit. Although often described as the easiest route, it is still a demanding mountain walk requiring a good level of fitness and appropriate clothing.
Covering approximately 14.5 kilometres (9 miles) return, the Llanberis Path gains around 975 metres (3,200 feet) in elevation. Most walkers take between six and eight hours to complete the return journey, depending on fitness levels, weather conditions and the number of stops along the way.
Unlike some of the steeper routes, the Llanberis Path follows broad, well-maintained tracks for much of the climb and generally avoids scrambling or exposed sections. For this reason it is often recommended for first-time visitors, families with older children and anyone looking for a more straightforward ascent. The route also follows the Snowdon Mountain Railway for much of its length, providing regular views of the historic trains as they climb the mountainside.
As the path gains height, walkers are rewarded with increasingly impressive views across Llyn Padarn, the Llanberis Pass and the surrounding mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. On clear days the summit offers panoramic views across North Wales, the Llŷn Peninsula, Anglesey and, under exceptional conditions, as far as Ireland.
During the main visitor season, refreshments and toilet facilities are usually available at Hafod Eryri, the summit visitor centre, although opening depends on weather conditions and the operation of the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Walkers should always carry sufficient food and water, as the café cannot be guaranteed to be open.

Our Recommendation
If this is your first time climbing Yr Wyddfa, the Llanberis Path is usually the best option. Start as early as possible, particularly during weekends and the summer months, and check the mountain weather forecast before setting off. Although the route is less demanding than some of the other paths, it is still a full day’s mountain walk and should not be underestimated.
