Playa Blanca is one of the most popular resort towns on Lanzarote and is located on the island’s sunny southern coast facing neighbouring Fuerteventura. Originally a small fishing village, Playa Blanca has developed into a modern holiday destination while still retaining a more relaxed atmosphere than some of the larger resorts elsewhere in the Canary Islands.
The town is particularly well known for its coastal scenery and easy access to several excellent beaches. Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo provide sheltered sandy bays suitable for swimming, while the famous Papagayo Beach lies a short distance east within a protected natural area. The surrounding coastline combines golden sand, turquoise water and black volcanic rock typical of Lanzarote’s landscapes.
One of the main focal points of Playa Blanca is Marina Rubicón, a modern marina lined with restaurants, cafés, bars and shops overlooking luxury yachts and excursion boats. The marina is especially lively during the evening when visitors walk beside the waterfront or dine outdoors overlooking the harbour. A popular market is also held here several times a week.
Playa Blanca’s long seafront promenade connects much of the resort and is ideal for walking beside the Atlantic Ocean. The route stretches for several kilometres and passes beaches, rocky coves and cafés with regular views towards Fuerteventura across the sea. Sunset is often particularly impressive along this coastline.
The resort also serves as one of the best bases for exploring southern Lanzarote. Timanfaya National Park, the volcanic vineyards of La Geria and the wild Papagayo coastline are all within relatively easy reach by car or excursion. Ferry services also operate regularly between Playa Blanca and Corralejo on Fuerteventura.
Despite its popularity, Playa Blanca generally feels calmer and more spacious than many heavily developed beach resorts. Low-rise buildings, volcanic landscapes and Lanzarote’s strict planning rules help preserve a more attractive appearance than in many mass tourism destinations. For many visitors, Playa Blanca successfully combines beaches, modern facilities and access to some of Lanzarote’s most impressive natural scenery.
